Ode to my MOM

My MOM…..

is beautiful
loves me
is always there for me
is the best
is my biggest champion, along with my girls who cheer me on all the time
hands out my postcards?

The day before Memorial Day- I’m talking to my mom on the phone about what time to meet at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music- Dance Africa Festival). This is a family ritual where everyone gets involved to hand out Red C.A.C. Studio postcards. I am tired as usual. I’m suppose to meet mom around 12:00 noon. As noon approaches, I realize I’m not going to make our noon handing out the postcards appointment so I call her.  Mom, “I’m not going to make it for noon, I will call you when I am leaving”. Mom replies ” I will see you out there”.

I must give you a visual of my mom- mom is a women of a certain age. She is fly and sassy. She has the tenacity of Malcom X- she will get it done “By Any Means Necessary” and the fierceness of and even resembles Patti La Belle. Got the picture!

I always leave postcards at mom’s house because we do street Fair’s all the time. Mom gets herself together and heads out on her lone mission of handing out postcards. In fact, she handed out all the postcards she took out with her- and it was a hot day. Mom carries them with her as she rides the train going to work, walking down the street, or with her as she runs her many errands over the course of her day. Imagine that!

I did meet up with her later on that day. I was tired from working on the new Studio website, recovering from my long day at work and the million other things I do over the course of my day.  Believe it or not- mom hung tough. She continued to walk with us as we handed out more postcards. For my mom, it is absolutely believable. Here’s the thing, everyone who knows my mom knows that this is not unusual for my mom. My mom is behind me 100%.

As my day winds down, it hit me- wow, my mom is awesome. She’s out there handing out postcards for her daughter by herself and enjoying it. I am blessed. Thank you mom. I love you so very much. Not just because you are the postcard diva, but because I know you love me and I feel it. Thank you mom. Thank you God for giving me my mom I am truly blessed.

So, if you see this short Patti LaBell looking, Malcolm X thinking lady strutting her stuff with postcards in her hand, please take one and wish her well. And, whatever you do don’t say anything off color because she will sass you right back. She’s my mom supporting her daughter and having fun.
