The Best Hair Towel Around

May 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

How often have you found yourself wringing and wringing and wringing your hair dry- for it to still be wet and frizzy on top of that. Problem solved. I’ve found the best hair towel around.  Imagine a towel made specifically to dry your hair. A towel  with fibers that are finer than silk, remarkably light, soft to the touch, and pampers the hair and body. This towel absorbs moisture more quickly and thoroughly than ordinary cotton towels, dramatically reducing the time to blow dry your hair. The hair towel also wraps easily into a turban and is comfortably light.

This wonder towel is made of Aquitex, an innovative fabric woven from ultra-fine microfibers to create a lightweight material with superior wicking capabilities, more surface area for greater absorption and a soft luxurious feel.

To purchase your hair towel, call The Studio 718-221-5581.

“My Hair Doesn’t Grow”

May 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Not true! Hair growth is a constant process for everybody.  The average rate of growth is one half inch per month and up to six or eight inches a year.  The average head has 120,000 strands of hair, and we normally lose from 50 to 100 hairs daily, so over time the mane thins out as we age.

Why is the no-growth myth so prevalent in the community? Quite simply, chemicals, heat implements, and overuse of tools, even simply combing and brushing, cause hair to break.  And hair growth is not as noticeable on tightly curled hair, thus we never seem to gain any appreciable length.

For Better or Worse

May 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

If you have just started locs- be patient. Like a married couple, you will find that there are good days and bad days. Keep in mind, locs really do have a mind of their own.  Remember, if you hold on and follow through to fruition- your patience will pay off in the end. Your locs will be beautiful and well worth the wait.

Ode to my MOM

May 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

My MOM…..

is beautiful
loves me
is always there for me
is the best
is my biggest champion, along with my girls who cheer me on all the time
hands out my postcards?

The day before Memorial Day- I’m talking to my mom on the phone about what time to meet at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music- Dance Africa Festival). This is a family ritual where everyone gets involved to hand out Red C.A.C. Studio postcards. I am tired as usual. I’m suppose to meet mom around 12:00 noon. As noon approaches, I realize I’m not going to make our noon handing out the postcards appointment so I call her.  Mom, “I’m not going to make it for noon, I will call you when I am leaving”. Mom replies ” I will see you out there”.

I must give you a visual of my mom- mom is a women of a certain age. She is fly and sassy. She has the tenacity of Malcom X- she will get it done “By Any Means Necessary” and the fierceness of and even resembles Patti La Belle. Got the picture!

I always leave postcards at mom’s house because we do street Fair’s all the time. Mom gets herself together and heads out on her lone mission of handing out postcards. In fact, she handed out all the postcards she took out with her- and it was a hot day. Mom carries them with her as she rides the train going to work, walking down the street, or with her as she runs her many errands over the course of her day. Imagine that!

I did meet up with her later on that day. I was tired from working on the new Studio website, recovering from my long day at work and the million other things I do over the course of my day.  Believe it or not- mom hung tough. She continued to walk with us as we handed out more postcards. For my mom, it is absolutely believable. Here’s the thing, everyone who knows my mom knows that this is not unusual for my mom. My mom is behind me 100%.

As my day winds down, it hit me- wow, my mom is awesome. She’s out there handing out postcards for her daughter by herself and enjoying it. I am blessed. Thank you mom. I love you so very much. Not just because you are the postcard diva, but because I know you love me and I feel it. Thank you mom. Thank you God for giving me my mom I am truly blessed.

So, if you see this short Patti LaBell looking, Malcolm X thinking lady strutting her stuff with postcards in her hand, please take one and wish her well. And, whatever you do don’t say anything off color because she will sass you right back. She’s my mom supporting her daughter and having fun.

Stop Tryin’ To Act Brand New- you are not trying to touch my hair are you?

May 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Head snaps to the side, eye squinted and blaring as your hand goes up to grab the hand that’s touching your hair.  Remember back in the day, if you dare extend your hand to touch another persons hair unsolicited-you would surely pull back a nub in the mist of being “cursed out”.  So please, “Stop Trying to Act Brand New (nina)- you know better! Ask first- excuse me, your hair is so…. may I touch it? As directed, if directed you may proceed.

*only in this era would I have to write such a thing, dhb.
